King Lear | He is the King of Britian. He has three daughter Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. He is blind to the fact that his daughters (Goneril and Reagan) want to get rid of his power. He is a tragic hero because he recognizes his faults and flaws before he dies of sadness. He recognizes that Cordelia and Kent are his true loyal followers. |
King of France | Is the husband of Cordelia. He goes to war with France and Albany because of King Lear. Cordelia wants to make sure Lear is safe so they (France) uses the power to protect him. |
Duke of Cornwall | Is the husband to Regan. Gets killed moves the plot along because then she wants to marry Edmund, and so does Goneril..this leads to both of their deaths. |
Duke of Albany | Is the husband to Goneril. Support to King Lear, so he is brave and cunning to go against his wife. |
Kent | Is the loyal servant of King Lear. After banished by the King he disguises hisself and come back into the kingdom to protect Lear. Lear doesn’t figure this out till the last act and scene. He is brave and loyal, he continues to come back and serve King Lear. |
Gloucester | A nobleman loyal to King Lear whose rank, earl, is below that of duke. He has two sons named Edmund and Edgar. He is blind to the good son and then actually becomes blind once his eyes are cut out. Parallel plot with King Lear. |
Edgar | Is the son of Gloucester. Is the good and trusting son. Once banished by his father he turns into Mad Tom, disguise as a mad beggar. He stays close so that he keep and eye on Lear. Parallel plot to Cordelia because he still keeps a eye on his father. |
Edmund | Is the bastard son of Gloucester.Edmund is the most complex and sympathetic. He is a schemer, a character eager to seize any opportunity and willing to do anything to achieve his goals. He tries to get power by telling Gloucester that Edgar is bad and is trying. Parallel plot to Goneril and Regan, because he is trying to gain power from his father.. creates conflict. |
Oswald | Is the servant to Goneril. |
The Fool | Is the court jester under King Lear. Serves as his, Lear’s conscience. |
Goneril | Is the daughter of King Lear. She is more dominate over the plans of getting rid of King Lear. She is married to the Duke of Albany. |
Regan | Is the daughter of King Lear. She is more dominate over the plans of getting rid of King Lear. She is married to the Duke of Cornwall. |
Cordelia | Is the daughter of King Lear and is his favorite even though he doesn’t truly recognize this until the end. She is contrasted throughout the play with Goneril and Regan, who are neither honest nor loving, and who manipulate their father for their own ends.Cordelia’s chief characteristics are devotion, kindness, beauty, and honesty. |
