They settled in Salem to practice religion. When there they persecuted others as they had been. They turned their colony into a place almost as bad as the one she left.
Explain how the witch-hunt years were a time of “general revenge” It was very strict religion and the witch hunt was for peopel that were not following a strict religion. They were expressing themselves. Everybody would blame others if they didnt like them.
Identify Tituba, Abigail, and Betty Tituba- Was the slave. She was in her forties. Abigail- Seventeen, beutiful girl, an orphanBetty- Abigails cousin. She fainted in the forest.
Why does Mrs. Putnam believe there are witches in Salem? Somebody murdered her babies. Her daughter Ruth cant speak. Putnam lost babies- blames it on witchcraft.
Why is Thomas Putnam bitter? Putnam wanted his brother-in-law to be the next minister and he was voted down. Putnams stepbrother recieved more money from fathers will. Putnam wanted to take others land from them.
Parris says, “Oh, Abigail, what proper payment for my charity! Now I am undone!” What does that mean? You dont know how to pay for something. You are stuck with with something. Parris thinks people are gonig to blame him for the witchcraft.
What is Mary’s argument to Abby? Mary and Abby are not teling the truth. Mary is goimg to get Abby to tell the truth. Mary says she didnt do anything. She just watched.
Describe Proctor A farmr in his middle thirthies, kind of man, powerful body, even tempered, and not easily led. He is a sinner.
What hppaened between Abigail and John Proctor prior to the opening of the play? Abigail and John Proctor had an affair.
What was the “sign” that betty was bewitched? She cant bea to hear the lords name.
Identify Francis and Rebecca Nurse. Respected and known for his calm nature revenged by the Putnams when Ann accused Rebecca Nurse of bewitching her babies implying their deaths. Francis- He was na unnoficial judgeRebecca Nurse- Wife of Francis Nurse
Explain the political relationship between the Putnam and Nurse families. They were on opposite polical sides. The putnams wanted a diiferent person for the Salem minister than the Nurse wanted. They were not liked by the Putnams because of land diputes and because Mrs. Putnam implied that Mrs. Putnam had bewitched her children who died.
What did Rebecca do to Betty? Rebecca stood over Betty and quieted her.
What is Rebecca’s explanation of th girls’ behavior? Shell wake in time. All the girls made up the story to get attention.
What is proctors reason for his not regualrly attending church? Parris doesnt mention god anymore.
What does Parris want? A mark of confidence. He wants the confidence of the people. The deed to his house and firewood. They also argue about lumber that was taken from Putnams property by Mr. Proctor.
What do Putnam and Proctor argue about? What does this show? The fact that god is never mentioned in church. Instead hell and damnation are talked about. Proctor doesnt like it. It shows division within the church.
Who is Rev. John Hale, and why sdoes he come to Salem? Nearing 40, tight skinned, eager eyed, intelectual. He was called upon to see if witchcraft was occuring.
To what did Tituba confess? Why? She confessed to witchcraft becasue she was spoken to by Hale, Parris.
What do the girls do at the end of Act one? They told who they saw with the Devil.
