At the beginning of the scene, why does Benvolio think that there will be a fight? Benvolio thinks that there will be a fight because the Capulets are there and it is getting crowded. Benvolio says that it is hot and the Capulets are around.
What does Mercutio accuse Benvolio of in lines 15-30? Mercutio accuses Benvolio of being a calm and outsider and not a good fighter. Benvolio wants them to stop the fight.
When Tybalt and Mercutio first begin arguing, what does Benvolio try to get them to do? Benvolio tries to get them to stop fighting and to move to a private place because everyone is staring at them.
What does Tybalt call Romeo? A villain– a pesaunt
Why won’t Romeo fight Tybalt? He won’t fight him because he won’t harm him and he tells him that he cares about him. Because Romeo and Tybalt are family now.
What does Mercutio think is the reason Romeo refuses to fight? Mercutio thinks that Romeo told Tybalt as an insult to be dishonorable and calm gentleman was a afraid.
Why does Mercutio keep repeating, “A plague o’ both your houses”? Because he is mad and he is upset that Romeo got in the way of Tybalt and Mercutio’s fight. He is saying, damn your houses because he is hurt and he is going to die. To curse them and he is related to the prince.
What does Romeo say that Juliet’s love has done to him? Juliet’s beauty has made him act like a woman and that it was weakened his courage to be a man. Turn him soft.
Why does Romeo call himself “fortune’s fool”? Because he threw away his fortune by killing a Capulet and it will cost his life. He doesn’t believe that he can control his faith. Victim of destiny.
When Benvolio relates to the Prince what happened, what does he say Romeo tried to do before Mercutio was killed? Benvolio says that Tybalt was the man that was killed by Romeo.
What does Lady Capulet accuse Benvolio of? Why? She accused him of lying about what happened to Tybalt because she is upset that Tybalt is dead.
What is Romeo’s punishment for killing Tybalt? He is going to be killed by the Prince. He is banished from Verona forever.
Why is Juliet so impatient for the nurse to return? Because she wants to know where Romeo is for the night with him and she is waiting for Romeo for their Honeymoon.
Describe Juliet’s rapidly changing attitudes toward Romeo in this scene. Juliet is happy and looking forward to the night with Romeo at the beginning of this scene. However, when the nurse is weeping about Tybalt’s death, Juliet thinks that Romeo is dead. So her mood changes from happy to sad and she is angry at the nurse and strikes at the nurse.
What piece of news has upset Juliet the most? That knowing that Romeo is banished from Verona.
What does the nurse promise to do? To get Romeo to comfort Juliet.
Explain Romeo’s reaction to the news of his banishment. He’s scared and he wants to kill himself. He despairs.
Romeo tells Friar Laurence that the priest cannot know or understand how Romeo feels. Why? Because Romeo wants to be with Juliet and he is angry about the killing of Tybalt.
What argument does Friar Laurence use to prevent Romeo from killing himself? He tells him that he is not a man for what he is doing and that he will lose everything, even Juliet. If he kills himself than he kills Juliet.
What does the nurse give to Romeo? She gives him a ring.
What does Capulet tell his wife to say to Juliet? To tell Juliet that she is going to marry Paris.
As Romeo is preparing to leave Juliet, what argument does she use to convince him to stay? That he can hide and that he should talk to her parents about the marriage. She is useing the birds as the nightingale to convince him to stay even though she knows that it is dawn.
Later, why does Juliet think Romeo should leave? So that he won’t be killed.
Just as Romeo is about to descend the rope ladder and leave Juliet, what does Juliet say about the way Romeo looks? as if he was in a tomb
Why does Lady Capulet think Juliet is crying? That she is crying over Tybalt’s death
When Lady Capulet threatens to send someone to Mantua to poison Romeo, what does Juliet say? That she will get the poison and give it to Romeo.
After Lady Capulet breaks the news about Paris, what is Juliet’s response? She does not want to marry Paris. She is not going to do it.

How does Juliet’s attitude toward the nurse change? She pretends to work out the problem but really is very frustrated and she said if she didn’t like the advice, she would commit suicide.
What “scheme” does Juliet devise to get rid of the nurse and to get out of the house? She tells the nurse that she will marry Paris and to help her pick out her things for the wedding tomorrow.
