Who is Escalus and what does he order? Escalus is the prince of Verona. He orders that the Capulets and Montagues stop instigating fight in the streets on pain of death.
According to Benvolio and Montague, how has Romeo been acting lately? Romeo has been acting depressed. He has been seen going into the woods at night with tears on his face, and in the morning he comes back to the house and locks himself into the room.
How does Romeo explain his behavior to Benvolio? He tells Benvolio that he is in love with a girl who does not love him back and plans to die a virgin.
What remedy does Benvolio suggest? Benvolio tells Romeo that he should see other women or find another to love. Romeo responds by saying that other women would look like crows compared to his love, and that there is no other who is more beautiful.
What does Capulet tell Paris he will have to do in order to marry Juliet? He tells Paris that he must wait two years, but that if he can win her heart and convince her to love him, than he will marry them at that point.
What is ironic about the servant asking Romeo to read the list of guests? The party was meant to be all Capulets, but the servant unknowingly asks the son of a Montague to read it.
What feeling do dwe get about the relationship between Juliet and her mother vs. Juliet and her nurse? The relationship between Juliet and her nurse is much more intimate than the one between Juliet and mother.
Why has Juliet’s mother come to her room before the party? Juliet’s mother comes to her (Juliet’s) room to convince her to marry Paris.
Explain Mercutio’s famous speech about Queen Mab. Mercutio tells Romeo of the dreams that Queen Mab delivers.
Is Queen Mab the queen of good dreams, nightmares, or both? Explain. Both.
What does Mercutio think of dreams? Mercutio thinks that they are meaningless and irrelavent.
What kind of person is Mercutio? He is a storyteller.
The Nurse is a “comic” character. Waht do we see here that suggests that? She makes sexual references and is very talkative.
