“Put money in thy purse.” Speaker: Iago Is said to: RodrigoMeaning: Give jewels to Desdemona to win her affection
“I am not what I am.” Speaker: Iago Is said to: Roderigo Meaning: Since Othello didnt give him the job, he has going to get back at him and cannot be who he was. He is no longer himself.
“Even now, now, very now, an old black ram/is tupping your white ewe.” Speaker: Iago Is said to: Barbantio Meaning: Othello and Desdemona are having sex
“She lov’d me for the dangers I had pass’d,/And I lov’d her that she did pity them.” Speaker: Othello Is said to: Duke and Brabantio Meaning: Desdemona loves Othello because of his stories/life and he loves her because she felt bad for him
“Look to her, Moor, if thou hast eyes to see./She has deceived her father and may thee.” Speaker: Barbantio Is said to: Othello Meaning: She married Othello without asking her fathers permission (betrayal) so she will betray Othello as well
“And little bless am I with the soft phrase of speech; /For since these arms of mine had seven year pith, Till now some nine moons wasted, they have used/ Their dearest action in the tented field.” Speaker: Othello Is said to: Duke and Brabantio Meaning: He has wasted his whole life fighting and doesn’t know much else.
“Reputation, reputation, reputation. O, I have lost my reputation!” Speaker: Cassio Is said to: IagoMeaning: He lost his lieutenant-ship because he got drunk and attacked someone. His honorable reputation is lost.
“Reputation is an idle and most false imposition;/ oft got without merit and lost without deserving” Speaker: Iago Is said to: CassioMeaning: Reputation doesn’t matter, and the fact that Cassio lost it shouldn’t matter.
“When devils will the blackest sins put on,/ They do suggest at first with heavenly shows. /As so I now.” Speaker: Iago Is said to: Himself (aside)Meaning: He must put on his best face because he needs to be innocent of the crimes he’s about to commit. Throw people of his trail.
“You see this fellow that is gone before?/ He’s a soldier fit to stand by Caesar/ And give direction;” Speaker: Iago Is said to: Himself (aside)Meaning: He is talking about Cassio and how his drunk mishap isn’t who he normal is and that he is an honorable man.
“O, beware, my lord of jealousy! / It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock/ The mean it feeds on.” Speaker: Iago Is said to: Othello Meaning: Dont be jealous of Desdemona, you will be lost to it.
“Men should be what they seem” Speaker: Iago Is said to: Othello Meaning: Men should be their true selves. Ironic because he is not his true self and is lying and manipulating Othello.
“Good name in man and woman, dear my lord, /is the immediate jewel of their souls. /Who steals my purse steals trash.” Speaker: Iago Is said to: Othello Meaning: Reputation is everything, if you steal, it is trash because it is not theirs. Stealing reputation means nothing. (Opposite of what he told Cassio)
“She did deceive her father, marrying you, / And when she seemed/To shake and fear your looks, / she loved them most.” Speaker: Iago Is said to: Othello Meaning: Desdemona lied to her father and pretended to be afraid of Othello to marry him. She loves him the most.
“I a glad I have found this napkin. This was her first remembrance from the Moor. My wayward husband hath a hundred times/ wooed me to steal it….” Speaker: Emilia Is said to: Herself Meaning: Iago wants it to make Othello think Cassio is sleeping with Desdemona. Emilia has refused to steal it but Desdemona dropped it.
“Why did I marry?” Speaker: Othello Is said to: Himself (aside) Meaning: He is regretting marrying Desdemona. He knows Iago knows more but is too nice to say anything else.
“But I do think it is their husbands’ faults/ If their wives do fall.” Speaker: EmiliaIs said to: Desdemona Meaning: Husbands can cheat/abuse/neglect their wives and be ok, then if their wives fall it is the husband’s fault if they fall.
“Sing all a green willow must be my garland./ Let nobody blame him, his scorn I approve.” Speaker: Desdemona Is said to: Emilia Meaning: She is saying Othello has a right to hate her.
“Some eternal villain… Have devised this slander.” Speaker: Emilia Is said to: Desdemona and Iago Meaning: Who ever is turning Othello against Desdemona is evil
“Fie, there be no such man. It is impossible.” Speaker: Iago Is said to: Desdemona and Emilia Meaning: Dramatic Irony, he is the evil man that devised all this.
