Act 1 Scene 1 | -Iago tells Roderigo of his hatred for Othello who gave the lieutenancy to Cassio not him-Iago and Roderigo awake Desdemona’s father to tell him that Desdemona has eloped with Othello-the news enraged Brabantio and he organizes and armed band to search for Othello |
Act 1 Scene 2 | -Iago warns Othello about Brabantio’s anger but Othello is confident in himself and in his love for Desdemona-Cassio arrives with news for Othello: he is to meet with the duke and the senators of Venice about a Turkish invasion of the colony-Brabantio and his armed band come to seize Othello but he persuades Brabantio to accompany him to the duke so he can talk to the duke and so Brabantio can present the case of the “theft” of his daughter |
Act 1 Scene 3 | -duke and senators discuss the movement of the Turkish fleet and decide it is heading towards Cyprus-when Othello and Brabantio arrive, the duke insists on evidence that Othello bewitched Desdemona-the duke sends for Desdemona as Othello describes his courtship of Desdemona-when Desdemona enters she tells how she married Othello out of love-the duke orders Othello to Cyprus and allows Desdemona to go with him-Othello assigns Iago with the duty of getting Desdemona to Cyprus-when alone with Iago, Roderigo, who desperately wants to win Desdemona, threatens suicide but Iago persuades him to sells his land for money and follower her to Cyprus-Iago starts to plot to himself how he is going to use Othello’s marriage to get bak at him and to get Cassio’s place and lieutenant |
Act 2 Scene 1 | -Turkish fleet is destroyed-Othello’s ship got separated-Desdemona arrives at Cyprus with Iago, Roderigo, Emilia-Othello later arrives and him and Desdemona reconnect-Iago puts his plan into action by making Roderigo think that Desdemona is in love with Cassio and by telling Roderigo that he should help get Cassio dismissed fro the lieutenancy |
Act 2 Scene 2 | -Herald with proclamation about Othello’s greatness, how the Turkish ship is destroyed, and everyone should celebrate(not important) |
Act 2 Scene 3 | -Iago gets Cassio drunk-makes it easy for Rodrigo to provoke Cassio into a brawl where he attacks Roderigo and wounds Montano-Othello is called and stops the brawl-Cassio is stripped of his lieutenancy just like Iago planned-Iago suggests that Cassio seeks Desdemona’s help in getting reinstated-next step in Iago’s plan is told and is to tell Othello that Desdemona supports Cassio because they are lovers |
Act 3 Scene 1 | -Cassio arrives with musicians to honor Othello and Desdemona -Cassio asks Emilia to arrange a meeting with Desdemona, just as Iago said to do, and Emilia assures him that Desdemona is already urging Othello to reinstate him |
Act 3 Scene 2 | -Othello gives Iago letters to five to the ship he arrived on (not important) |
Act 3 Scene 3 | -Desdemona’ talk with Cassio is cut short by Othello and Cassio leaves to avoid talking to Othello-Desdemona treis to persuade Othello-Iago tells Othello that Cassio’s avoidance of him (Othello) is suspicious and that Cassio may not be honorable (Iago hints he knows more than he is saying)-Iago warns Othello against being jealous of Desdemona-Desdemona enters and offers to bind Othello’s head with the handkerchief when he say he has a headache-as they exit the handkerchief falls unnoticed-Emilia picks up the handkerchief and gives it to Iago just as he wanted-Othello reenters and demands Iago prove Desdemona’s unfaithfulness-Iago says that at night Cassio talks in his sleep about making love to Desdemona and that he wiped his beard with her handkerchief-Othello is convinced and vows to kill Desdemona and Iago agrees to kill Cassio-Iago is appointed to lieutenancy |
Act 3 Scene 4 | -Desdemona is worried about the lost handkerchief and Othello gets mad at her when she doesn’t have it-Desdemona must put aside her effort for Cassio due to Othello’s anger-Bianca appears and Cassio finds the handkerchief in his room (Iago put it there)-Cassio asks Bianca to copy the embroidery work for him |
Act 4 Scene 1 | -Iago continues to torment Othello with vivid descriptions of Desdemona’s supposed affair until Othello blacks out-Iago then places Othello where he can see (not hear) a conversation with Cassio about Bianca, telling Othello that the conversation is about Cassio and Desdemona-Othello’s fury grows-Lodovico arrives from Venice with orders that Othello return to Venice and Cassio takes his place-Othello slaps Desdemona is Lodovico’s presence, rudely dismisses her, and leaves in a jealous rage-Lodovico expresses how surprised he is by the change in Othello |
Act 4 Scene 2 | -Othello questions Emilia about Cassio and Desdemona’s relationship-Othello denounces Desdemona and calls her a ***** to her face-Desdemona turns for Iago for help and he reassures her-Roderigo protests to Iago that his gifts to Desdemona have won him no favor with her and threatens to take them back-Iago counter threats that Desdemona will leave for Mauritania with Othello unless Rodrigo can delay them-Iago says the best way is to kill Cassio |
Act 4 Scene 3 | -Othello is walking with Lodovico and orders Desdemona to go to bed and to dismiss Emilia-Emilia helps Desdemona prepare for bed and they discuss marriage-Desdemona argues that no woman would be unfaithful to her husband and Emilia argues that women have the same desires as men |
Act 5 Scene 1 | -Roderigo attacks Cassio, who uninjured stabs Roderigo-Iago woulds Cassio’s leg-hearing Cassio cry out, Othello thinks that Iago has killed Cassio and leaves to kill Desdemona-Iago then kills Roderigo so he can’t testify to what happened-Iago, Lodovico and Gratiano tend to Cassio and Bianca arrives-Iago accuses her of being a ***** and of coming up with the plot against Cassio |
Act 5 Scene 2 | -Desdemona is asleep in bed when Othello enters and he wakes her with a kiss-Othello accuses her of infidelity and smothers her over her protests on innocence-Emilia enters to tell Othello about the violence on the streets and sees Desdemona dead-Desdemona uses her last words to say she killed herself in order to protect Othello and prove she truly loves him-Othello admits he murdered Desdemona and tells of how Iago had informed him of Desdemona’s unfaithfulness-Emilia’s cries of murder bring Iago, Montano, and Gratiano-Iago, under pressure, admits to accusing Desdemona and Emilia reveals the truth about the handkerchief-Othello tries to kill Iago and Iago kills Emilia-Othello stabs himself and falls dead next to Emilia and Desdemona on the bed-Iago is taken away laughing to be tortured and killed |
