Frankenstein Ch. 1-10

Who is Robert walton? What is he searching for? What’s his attitude toward his quest? What does this suggest about his character? He is an explorer traveling to discover something no one has seen before, a secret passage to the North Pole and how it’s relates to magnets. He has this Deep Seeded Ambition To Be the First. P.7 ” There is something at work in my soul which I do not understand.” Soul/emotions he can’t explain that he’s acting on. He believes in the supernatural
In the letter to his sister, what does Walton say he longs for? Why do you think he feels lonely even tho he’s surrounded by people? P.4 “I desire the company of a man who could sympathize with me, whose eyes would reply to mine.” He feels lonely because there no one on the ship who “possessed of a cultivated as well as of a capacious mind, whose tastes are like my own, to approve or mend my plans.”
How does Walton respond to the stranger? Why do you think walton is attracted to the stranger? He was very hospitable and nursed the Stranger back to health. He felt a connection – the stranger is educated, understands his ambition, and is like minded. Friend? ” I have found a man who, before his spirit had been broken by misery, I should have been happy to have possessed as the brother of my heart.”
Why is the poem the Ancient Mariner important to Walton? How is the stranger similiar to the Mariner? Walton referenced the Ancient Mariner in his 2nd letter to his sister telling her not to worry he won’t shoot any albatrosses. But his attitude soon changes and he tells the Stranger “one man’s life or death were but a small price to pay for the acquirement of the knowledge which I sought.” The stranger upon hearing this bursts into tears and demands Walton listen to his tale and heed his warning to not make the same mistakes as he did. P.15 ” Prepare to hear of occurrences which are usually deemed marvelous… listen to my story maybe you’ll stop before it’s too late.”
Who is Elizabeth and how does Frankenstein feel about her? What does their relationship tell you about Frankenstein’s values and personality? She’s Frankenstein’s adopted sister (not taught to view eachother as family more as family friends) He describes her on p.21 as “My more than sister-the beautiful adored companion of all my occupations and my pleasures.” He’s extremely protective and possessive ” I looked upon Elizabeth as mine- mine to protect, love, and cherish.” He’s also obsessive
What is Frankenstein’s purpose in pursuing science? What does he study? P.33 ” I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold the deepest mysteries of creation.” On p.23 ” it was the secrets of heaven and earth that I desired to learn… my inquiries were directed to the metaphysical… the physical secrets of the world.” He studies the works of Agrippa, Magnus, and Paracelsus. After his first success on p.39 his imagination ran and he wanted to create a giant being.
Give specific examples of Frankenstein’s isolation from others He never visits home his success in work drove him to create a being like him. His love for nature disappeared p.41. He is so bent on reanimating life that he alienates himself and his health
What does Victor do to study anatomy? Goes to graveyards and digs up dead bodies. P.37-38 He has to remind his audience (Walton) these aren´t the words of a madman and that he actually did all of this in the name of science. P.40 He wants to create a being ¨a new species would bless me as its creator and source… I dabbled among the unhallowed damps of the grave…¨ He knows what he´s doing is unholy
What did Victor Frankenstein do upon animating his creature? On p. 43 after giving it life he calls it a ¨lifeless thing¨, ¨catastrophe¨- he knows it was a mistake. Ironic how he calls it ¨the different accidents of life¨- when it was not on accident but rather on purpose- it was his goal. He built it up so much in mind that the reality was no comparison. His first reaction was to run away from his creation- he created it without realizing the consequences.
Who writes letters to Victor and whose letter makes him come home? The first letter is from Elizabeth- everyone´s worried about him- he chooses to alienate himself- and it provides background on Justine and how she´s come back to live with them. The second letter is from his father- talks about William´s murder and begs Victor to come home- this one prompts his return
How is Frankenstein affected by the knowledge that the creature may be responsible for the death of William? Which statement shows that he views the creature as part of himself? He gets physically affected on p. 63 he has to lean on a tree. Plays the victim and uses it as an excuse to stay out all night. He says on p. 64 “I considered the being whom I had cast among mankind and endowed with the power to effect purposes of horror… nearly in the light of my vampire…” He manifested his darkness into a physical being.
How does the diction Victor uses to describe his creature reflect on him? On p.47 Victor calls it ¨monster¨- this negative evil connotation he gives the creature reflects on him- the creature is an extension of himself that he wants to hide from and isolate away from everyone including himself.
How long has it been since Victor has returned home? 6 years
How long has it been since he has seen the being? 2 years ¨2 years had now elapsed since the night on which he first received life¨-passive not accepting he gave it life
Who is blamed for williams death? How does Frankenstein feel? Justine, the servant girl is blamed. Frankenstein takes ownership that she was a victim but he doesn’t do anything about it. P.76 “William and Justine, the first hapless victims to my unhallowrd arts.”
Where does Victor go for refuge? Nature- the mountains in solitude
What does the creature say upon meeting Frankenstein on the mountain? P.85-88 After Frankenstein tells it to begone, the creature replies ¨How do you sport thus with life?”- gives the connotation that its sport, them of playing with life violating nature in the process. The creature says Frankenstein had a duty to him that he abandoned. He referenced The Fall saying ¨I ought to be thy Adam, but rather I am the Fallen Angel¨ He´s saying Frankenstein put him in this role ¨misery made me a fiend¨ I wasn´t made like this- you´re responsible for me.
What is the creatures one request? For Victor to listen to his tale
