Act 3 Macbeth review w/vocab

Banquo is both suspicious and yet hopeful; explain. Banquo is both suspicious and hopeful because he wants his prophecies to true and his son to become king. He is hopeful because if the prophecies come true for Macbeth then they could definitely come true for him.
Why are both Banquo and Fleance a threat to Macbeth? Banquo is a threat to Macbeth because he is the only one that knows of the prophecies and overthrows him with his son Fleance. Fleance is Banquo’s son and the prophecy says that his sons will become king and since Macbeth is king he could possibly be overthrown.
What does Macbeth mean when he says, “let every man be master of this…?” Macbeth is saying to let every man do what he wants with himself until nightfall.
Macbeth is experiencing little pleasure being king? Why, what is he afraid of? (Page 116) Macbeth is experiencing hardly any pleasure for being king because of all the deaths he has on his head and feels that there are people out there that all still a threat to him and his crown.
How does he convince the murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance? How is this argument ironic? Macbeth convinces the murders to kill Banquo and Fleance by asking if they are truly men. Also say Banquo is the cause of all their troubles. This argument is ironic because that is the argument that LD used on Macbeth to kill Duncan
Lady Macbeth says, “Things without all remedy should be done without regard: what’s done is done”. (Lines 13-14, page 124) What does she mean? LM is saying things that cannot be changed should be ignored. What’s done is done.
If they could, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth would change places with whom? Why? What motif is continuing in this act? Macbeth and Lady Macbeth want to trade places with Duncan because they killed him and they don’t want to feel the guilt anymore. The motif that is continuing in the act is sleeplessness.
What happens when the murderers attack Banquo and Fleance? They are able to kill Banquo and cut his throat. Fleance was able to escape the murders.
What does Macbeth mean when he says, “There the grown serpent lies; the worm has fled”? (Line 32, page 136) What is this an allusion to? Macbeth is talking about Fleance who had fled and now is plotting against whoever murdered his dad. This is an allusion to the bible.
Who appears to Macbeth at the banquet? What is his reaction? How does Lady Macbeth excuse his behavior? Banquo appears to Macbeth at the banquet. Macbeth is astonished and very surprised by the ghost and is freaking out. Lady Macbeth excuses his behavior by saying that he has act like that since a child.
Explain what Macbeth means when he says, “…blood will have blood”. (Line 144, page 146) Because of Macbeth’s killings lately and for all of the blood he has shed that more will come not only to his enemies but to him as well. It is like fight fire with fire.
Explain Macbeth’s statement, “I am in blood, stepped in so far that, should I wade no more… we are but young in deed”. (Lines 159-160,167, page 146) Macbeth is saying that he has waded so deep in blood that, even if he tried to sop, it would be as hard to go back as to wade the res of the way across. There is no going back.
Who does Macbeth decide to go see? Why? Macbeth decides to go see the witches. The witches would tell him information and wisdom about the kingship – prophecies.
What do the witches decide to do with Macbeth? Destroy his life
What suspicions are beginning to grow about Macbeth? Where had Macduff gone? Why? Macduff had gone to England to find and meet up with Malcom who has been talking to the king of England about everything happening in Scotland. The suspicions against Macbeth are that he killed everyone to get the kingship and he is going crazy. They are calling Macbeth a tyrant.
Explain “…under a hand accursed”. (Line 52, page 154) They are saying that Macbeth is a bad king and that he should have never endured it. They are being ruled by a cursed human being.
Be able to trace the changes in Macbeth from Act 1 to 3 Macbeth in Act 1 was a loyal Thane of Cawdor until he heard from the witches that he could become king. In Act 2 he was unsure of himself and couldn’t decide whether he was going to kill Duncan or not. He eventually does though and becomes king even though he isn’t ruthless enough. In act 3 he is now insane and regrets everything he has done to get to where he is as king.
Be able to discuss the change in the relationship between Macbeth and LD from Act 1 to 3 Their relationship has changed dramatically. In act 1 it was good and they were both loyal and faithful to each other. They would tell everything they knew to each other. In Act 2 they were getting into arguments and calling each other cowards and not ready to do what needs to be done. In act 3 they don’t tell each other what they are doing. They both wish that they could go back to how things used to be before the witches appear.
